Our Ultimate Guide to Documenting Your Details Through Flat Lays

There are many different things that go into the ‘details’ portion of a wedding, and because there are so many, oftentimes, things may get forgotten or looked over - one of those things being your flat lay!

If you’re newer to the wedding planning world or are just recently engaged, you may have no idea what a flay lat is, and that’s totally okay!

We wanted to write this blog post to give a little more insight into what they are and what you can include, while also providing plenty of inspiration photos from past weddings to hopefully spark some ideas as to what you may want yours to look like :)

So, to start, the base of any flat lay are all of your paper goods.

This may include:

  • Save-the-date

  • Full invitation suite

  • Wedding program

  • Place Cards

  • Engagement photos

  • Menu

  • Custom Signage

Years after the wedding, even if you hold onto these things, they may be long gone and tucked away in a box somewhere, and it’ll be nice to have photos and memories of how they were made a part of your big day.

The next group of things you can include are any personal items that have special meaning or that you’ll be wearing/using on the day-of the wedding.

There are a lot of possibilities within this category, as everyone is likely to have certain things that are unique to them and their wedding.

Some of the things we’ve seen included most are:

  • Engagement ring

  • Wedding bands

  • Shoes

  • Hair pieces

  • Watch

  • Perfume/cologne

  • Earrings

  • Necklace

  • Vow books

  • Boutonniere

  • Veil

  • Family heirlooms

The great thing about flat lays is that they can be completely personalized to you and your partner, so please don’t feel as though you need to have all of these things or that you can’t include something else!

The last category of what to add is essentially things to pull everything together and ‘make it look pretty.’

Here’s what to think about:

  • Florals that match the rest of your color scheme

  • Loose greenery

  • Mat or fabric as a backdrop

  • Trays or Mirrors

  • Cheese Cloth

  • Ribbons

  • Ring Boxes

  • Wax Seals

  • Stamps

  • Embroidery Scissors

Here at Fancy Fox Events, we love to help our couples with their flat lay photos and can even put it together for you on wedding day! A lot of what was just listed we actually already have in our inventory, and can bring it along with us if you’re interested in utilizing it!

With all that said, flat lay photos aren’t for everyone! If you think there are other photos you’d rather have taken on the day-of, no problem!

We just always like to recommend flat lays to our couples, because, while in the thick of the planning journey it may seem like something else to add to your plate, you’ll get to look back on these photos and have memories flood in.

Not only will you remember the *what* - what you wore, what you used, what your florals looked like, etc., but you’ll also remember the *how* - how you shared a special moment with mom when you put on your jewelry, or how you felt when you read your vows to one another for the first time.

As quick as a wedding day can go by, we want you to have as many lasting memories as possible to cherish for years to come :)
